"HEALTHY TEETH AND GUMS FOR LIFE"

Smile Brightly With Thorough Teeth Cleaning

Regular teeth cleaning is an extremely important part of proper oral hygiene for good oral health. Contact us today to book your cleaning!

Tartar can build up easily over time, even with a diligent brushing and flossing routine, but professional dental cleaning can remove this buildup which can lead to cavities, gum disease, including periodontal disease, and other issues.

Professional Teeth Cleaning to Avoid Tooth Decay and Periodontal Disease

Even if you take very good care of your teeth at home, plaque can easily build up in areas that are hard to reach, especially along the gum line. This plaque hardens into tartar, also known as calculus, which creates a home for bacteria. This leads to cavities and gum disease, which, left untreated, can develop into periodontal disease, which is a more serious form of gum disease.

Tartar can’t be removed at home, so a professional deep cleaning to remove tartar and debris that can’t be reached with a toothbrush is necessary. Our dental hygienist can clean your teeth professionally, to help you avoid tooth decay and other oral and dental health issues. If there is a severe tartar build-up, or it has built up underneath the gum line on the root surface, a second appointment for dental scaling or root planing may be required. With regular dental care and checkups, this can be avoided.

Get Your Teeth Cleaned Every Three to Six Months

It’s recommended that you get professional teeth cleaning done regularly, ranging anywhere from three to six months. In addition to having your teeth cleaned more deeply than you can do at home, it gives our dentist a chance to check your teeth, gums, mouth, and throat.

Our Process

An ultrasonic instrument can remove stubborn tartar. This tartar debris is washed away from the teeth and gums using a water mist.

A variety of fine hand tools remove smaller bits of calculus from the teeth. These tools can look intimidating, but our dental hygienists apply gentle pressure to clean your teeth carefully.

We polish your teeth with an electronic polisher and a paste similar to toothpaste.

At the end of the cleaning, the dental hygienist may choose to apply fluoride to your teeth. Fluoride is a preventative treatment which helps to strengthen tooth surfaces. This is particularly useful for spots where tartar build-up and plaque will have weakened your tooth enamel.

Your dentist will also check your smile and screen you for oral and dental health concerns, including an oral cancer screening.

We take x-rays of our patients’ mouths at regular intervals to determine if any non-visible concerns need to be addressed by the dentist. This allows us to diagnose and treat any issues at the earliest possible stage.

Tips for Proper Oral Hygiene

Visiting your dentist will protect you from tooth decay and create strong, healthy teeth and gums. But it’s also vital that you keep good oral hygiene at home. Maintain your oral health between visits to our Stoney Creek office with these tips:

Brush your teeth at least twice daily, usually for two minutes or more.

Focus on brushing soft tissues inside the mouth too including gums, cheeks, tongue, and the roof of the mouth.

Floss at least once daily, being sure to drag the floss underneath the gums to scrape along the bottom or top of each tooth.

An antibacterial mouthwash may help; your dentist can advise.

Rinse your mouth with water after eating, especially if you have consumed acidic or sugary foods. This will flush away acid that will erode tooth enamel and debris that leads to plaque and bacteria which can cause cavities.

These tips will help you maintain a healthy smile between cleanings at our Stoney Creek dental office.
